The Best Places to Hunt in Colorado with your ATV or UTV

Sep. 9 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

Now that we’re in the middle of hunting season, you’re probably ready to rev up the old ATV and find the best spots to grab the biggest game. Of course, what you’re hunting for might change where you go, but there are lots of hunting land for you to check out here in Colorado. Peak Honda World has provided some of our favorite spots to help get you started. For more tips, stop by our location in Littleton, Colorado. We also serve Denver and Aurora.

Know the Rules

Firstly, it’s important to know the applicable OHV regulations for the state. You’ll want to review any specific information about the areas you’re going to, or call the field offices for more information. But, in general, any ATV use must be limited to the trails. You can’t chase after game in it and you can’t shoot from it, with the exception of specially licensed hunters with mobility impairments. And, of course, your weapons will need to be cased and stowed away while you’re in motion.

We also highly recommend a certain amount of courtesy to your fellow hunters. Using an OHV is a privilege and you should try to be respectful of other hunters in the area.

White River National Forest

Just west of Denver, you’ll find the White River National Forest. This area spans a whopping 2.3 million acres, with 11 ski resorts, eight wilderness areas, and is home to 10 of the peaks over 14,000 feet. It’s here you’ll find a wide range of game to hunt, including large and small mammals and fowl. Only certain areas allow ATVs, so factor this in when planning your trip. If it’s going to be a bit of a drive, check out the many campgrounds available so you can stay overnight. We also highly recommend checking out some of the stunning views and trails, as well as the many historic sites, like the History Crystal Mill near Marble.

Pike and San Isabel National Forests, Cimarron, and Comanche National Grasslands

We know that’s a mouthful, but this area covers a massive portion of the southeastern part of the state. The area stretches from the forests at the base of the Rockies, into the open prairie of the Great Plains. There are lots of great hunting areas for big and small game, as well as trapping opportunities. You can also enjoy other activities like horse riding and winter sports in the coming months.

Rio Grande National Forest

A little bit farther west, you’ll reach Rio Grande National Forest, which offers over a million acres of untouched landscape, filled with deer, elk, rabbits, pheasants, and ducks. The state has worked hard to maintain this land so future generations can continue to enjoy the area. You can spend time hunting in designated areas, but you can also go for a drive through one of the many scenic byways or use your ATV to explore the Wheeler Geologic Area (or at least a vehicle with four-wheel drive). And, of course, there are dozens of amazing trails to hike and ride.

These are just a few areas you can go to enjoy ATVing while hunting, but Colorado is filled with these kinds of areas. Not to mention, each location has its own special spots that we here at Peak Honda World would love to hear more about.
